Fascinating piece about a group of invertebrates I knew very little about. Did not realize the impressive diversity of this group here in North America. Once again we need to value/take better care of our rivers and streams!
I’ve seen many crayfish in Iowa - as well as their little chimneys. I’ve used them for smallmouth bass bait. I’ve incorporated them into stream biodiversity monitoring activities. But I have no idea how to tell one species from another…🤦.
In New Zealand we call them kōura.
